Flash fiction- wild new york
-What did you learn about nuclear science?
I mainly really learned about Chernobyl and what happened and how it's wild life is surviving.
-What was most engaging about this project?
I think the part of this project that was most engaging was creating our own stories based on what we have learned about nuclear science.
-What was most challenging?
The most challenging part was changing what we read and making it our own story.
Wild New York By: Jordyn Marez
Before the explosion in New York...
Thousands of people lived there with very little wildlife but after the nuclear explosion, everything changed. The streets had no cars, the sidewalks had no people, the businesses were empty but there were animals everywhere. Bears in parking garages, raccoons in trash bins, wolves picking up scraps of dead animal meat, birds perching on the high rises. New York was their playground. Nobody was there to harm them or scare them. The population of the animals was thriving. The nuclear radioactivity didn’t effect them at all. There were more birds than anything in New York now since they already lived there with the humans but just with different breeds now.
Then come along this couple who want to test the animals to see all of the animals and how they live. When they get there, they stand there and just look around at how many animals live in New York. The animals would walk right up to them without any fear of getting hurt or killed. They had to find an area where it didn’t have a lot of animals so they could sleep and record what they do to survive. As they set up the equipment, the animals become very interested in what they are doing with these objects so they come close to check it out. What the couple had set up was a camera on a tripod hooked up to a computer that would scan each animal that would walk in front of it. It would tell them the about the age of the animal and it’s health and also what it had eaten in the past two days.
After about a month of being in New York, the couple had figured out that in about 1/10 of the animals had the radiation in it’s body or had eaten something that died from the radiation. They also saw that the animals were populating and that they were living longer than other wild animals in other parts of the world. The animals have gotten used to the humans being there and they follow them around sometimes. The couple had only planned to stay in New York for a month but they wanted to stay and further their research.
They stayed and they got to see all of the baby animals and they also tested them to see if they had the radioactivity in them and they did not which made the couple very relieved and they went back home for a couple of weeks but then came back to New York because they wanted to stay with the animals. They continued their research for years and the animals stayed healthy and lived long lives but the entire time throughout this research, the couple had to wear masks that covered their mouths because just because the animals weren’t getting sick, that didn’t mean that the couples wouldn’t.
After 5 years of being in New York, the couple decide that they should try to not wear the masks and see how it goes. So they go 2 days without the masks and the girlfriend gets sick. Not knowing that it’s just a normal cold, they panic and go back home. Once they figure out that it’s a normal cold, they regret leaving New York but they decide that they should just stay home and leave the animals alone.
